How to create and post videos to TikTok

How to create and post videos to TikTok

Are you thinking about joining TikTok but need a crash course on how to create and post videos?

We’re here to help - let’s break things down for you!

Most people will likely post a video directly from the mobile app but you can also post from a desktop, so let’s take a look at both of these options and which one might be the best choice for you!

How-to post on TikTok via desktop

Although most people likely post on TikTok via the app, it is possible to upload and post via desktop as well.

Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your profile on the desktop site.

  2. Click the “Upload” button in the top right corner.

  3. Click “Select files” and then select the files that you want to post.

  4. Once it uploads you’ll be able to make some edits, such as trimming the video ro splitting up the file into several clips.

  5. Write your caption and include any relevant or key hashtags you want to use.

  6. In the “Cover” section, select a still from your video to be your cover image.

  7. Select who you want to be able to watch your video: Followers, Friends, or Private (only visible to you).

  8. Select what you want users to be able to do: Comment, duet, or stitch. “Duets” allow others to display your video in a split screen while their video plays on the other side and “Stitches” allow users to incorporate your content into their videos.

  9. You can choose to schedule your video. If you turn this button on, you will be prompted to enter a date and time for your video to be published.

  10. You can also run a copyright check in case you’re using audio in your video that is copyrighted

  11. Click “Post” when you’re ready!

Here’s an overview of what the page will look like:

There are fewer creative options (i.e. filters, text options, etc.) for editing when posting via desktop, so I would recommend posting via desktop if you’re happy with your video as it is. So, if your video needs only a little editing (like trimming) or if you’ve already edited it elsewhere (for example, if you work in Canva), this option would likely be fine for you!

How-to post on TikTok via the app

  1. Log in to your profile in the app.

  2. Tap the centre tab ("+”) to enter the camera mode. (See image below)

  1. Two options:

    1. If you are creating a video in app, tap the length you need: 3m (minutes), 60s (seconds), 15s, or Now (note that “Now” is more for capturing daily moments and is only shown to select users or those who are your mutual “friends.” Tap the red centre circle to record and tap again once you are done recording. Note: If you want to record hands-free in the app, click the timer tool on the right hand side.

    2. If you are using pre-filmed content that is saved to your camera roll, tap “Upload” on the right side of your screen, select the video(s) you want to include, and click next.

  2. Once you’ve recorded or selected your video, you can now use the buttons on the right side to add various features and edit your video. For example, you can edit your video(s) (first icon), add captions (by tapping the 7th icon down), etc.

  3. Once your video is ready, select Next.

  4. You can now add your text and hashtags, tag other TikTok accounts, add your location, and manage other options such as allowing stitches or duets. Make sure “Allow comments” is turned on (it will be green).

  5. Click “Post” when you are ready to share your post.

Here’s an overview of what the screen will look like when uploading/filming and what the features are.

And that’s it!
