What can you learn about marketing from your favourite Christmas Divas

Full disclosure… this blog is completely self serving because Christmas happens to be one of my favourite times of the year. And I gladly listen to Christmas music pretty early on (don’t @ me). In past I’ve discussed Christmas carols and what you might find surprising about them (Ward Anderson AKA The Christmas Guy is a wealth of knowledge!!), but this year I wanted to focus on the divas of Christmas music. This year, when you hear these songs pop up on the radio or while you’re shopping, I want you to associate them with some helpful marketing tips!

So, here are three Christmas Divas and what you can learn from their career and their roll out through Christmas.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is often looked at as the Queen of Christmas. We are flooded with lavish images and videos of her décor and clothing. But not only that, every year we get a peek at Christmas at her house with her family and friends. And of course, her hit All I want for Christmas is you will forever be a seasonal anthem that is on repeat.

What can you learn from Mariah and her status as the Queen of Christmas? Lean into it. Lean into your differentiator. Find that one thing that you can use to help you stand out among your audiences. The best differentiators can stand the test of time, so try to focus on things that you can easily keep up with.

Brenda Lee

In some ways, Brenda Lee is the OG Christmas Diva with her hit Rockin’ around the Christmas tree. While her song never cracked the top 10 in it’s day (it was release in 1958), it actually reached number 1 on Billboard’s top 100 this year.

What can you learn from Brenda Lee and her slow rising chart topper? It’s never too late. Technologies change, audience behaviours and tastes change – change is inevitable. The key is how to you deal with it. So if you feel like you have missed an opportunity, another one will come up or another way to approach it will come up. Growing a business and connecting with customers can be challenging and you have to make strategic decisions along the way. If something doesn’t turn out the way you thought it would or you said “not now” to something, it’s OK to revisit it. In fact, that is how you’ll grow your business and keep things fresh!

Cher

It’s no secret I am a HUGE Cher fan. Still enjoying a successful career even after decades – and launching her gelato business Cherlato – Cher FINALLY released a Christmas album. It has a star-studded line up of collaborators (not surprising!) and some incredibly memorable tracks. I will never tire of Cher’s voice.

What can you learn from Cher’s decades long career without recording a Christmas album? There is always room for surprise and delight. While consistency is important when it comes to your branding and strategy, you should always try to add in things that will catch your audience off guard in the best ways possible. Cher has had an incredibly eclectic career that has lead to her EGOT status and a number of chart toppers over six decades. She has managed to reinvent herself while still staying true to what she wants. You can do the same thing with your marketing strategy.

If you’re looking for inspiration you don’t need to look too far as there are so many businesses and individuals who are doing amazing things with their marketing!
